Winter/Spring Farm Chore Days for 2012 will be posted soon.

Winter/Spring FARM DAYS  2011

We have planned several work days for kids to join us at the farm.  “Farmer Brad”, Julie and Gil will be at the farm ready to help the kids learn various chores and work on a variety of projects.  Each date we will present a job and provide the tools and materials and will work with the kids to help them problem solve, break down the jobs into tasks, and determine who will be responsible for each task – and then off we’ll go to work.  We will educate and then encouraged them to do much of the planning, and then we’ll step back and give direction only when needed.  Of course, safety will be our priority.

Each day we’ll begin with a half hour of basic chores, collecting eggs, getting hay and water to the animals and doing routine animal health checks, and checking fences and gates to see if any new “jobs” are necessary.  Then we’ll be completing new projects depending on the weather and time of year. Here is what is planned so far…

These are designed as “drop off” programs, but parents are always welcome to stay and enjoy the time with us and their children. Children younger than 4 years old may attend with parents.

February:

Saturday February 5th 2011 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Maple Syrup - Tree Tapping (and Animal tracking)

$15 / child ($10 for siblings)

We have the drill bits, and all equipment to tap the Maple trees on our property.  The children will learn to measure the trees, and learn how to identify and determine which trees are appropriate for tapping.  They will help in each step for tapping the trees and collecting the sap.  Time permitting, we will be checking the area to see if the children can help us identify who has been visiting the farm at night. (Lots of tracks in the snow!!!)

Saturday February 19th 2011 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. –Making Maple Syrup and 3rd Annual Outdoor pancake Breakfast  $15 / child ($10 for siblings)

The children will be collecting sap and helping to keep the fire going as we burn off the sap to make syrup.  They will help follow a recipe for pancakes we’ll make outside on a griddle ....last year they ate 60 pancakes in about three minutes! J And they were very careful not to waste even a drop of syrup after learning how much sap is needed to make an ounce of syrup!   Again, depending on weather conditions, we’ll also do some basic farm chores.

April:

Saturday April 9th 2011 10:00-12:00 –  Spring Farm Chores Day

We’ll be working on Spring Farm Chores, maybe preparing to move the sheep out of the barn?  Some garden planning? Prepping the Corn Crib/Chicken house? We’ll check to see if the bees made it through the winter.  (Last year a bear destroyed the hives just before spring.)  The “to do” list will depend on the weather over the next several weeks ~ we’ll have to wait and see!

May:

Saturday May 7th 2011 10:00-12:00 – What makes a Wildlife Habitat?                                                               Soulshine Farm has been designated as a Certified Wildlife Habitat. We will be hanging a brass plaque from the National Wildlife Federation with the children and teaching them how this designation is made.  We’ll explore the areas of the farm that are available to wildlife and they’ll learn ways to make their own yards more welcoming for wildlife, and the benefits of doing so.
